Many physicians will prescribe sleeping pills to address short-term insomnia, completely unaware that over time, some patients will no longer be able to fall asleep without their pills. Those who build up tolerance will have to increase their dosage just to fall asleep at night, at which point they are sustaining an addiction.
Sleeping pills are classified as sedative-hypnotics, just like Xanax and other benzodiazepines and barbiturates. Sleeping pills, however, are separate from benzodiazepines, and they are casually referred to as “z-drugs.” They do, however, attach to the same GABA receptors in the brain, only with fewer side effects than benzodiazepines.
Overcoming sleeping pill addiction is a major challenge, and attempting to do so alone is even more of a struggle. However, the appropriate treatment, care and support will help you commit to a long-term recovery plan.
