A partial hospitalization program, or PHP, is the most structured level of care we offer. Most people in our PHP live on site with us for the length of the program, so treatment is not something you drive to and leave behind in the evening.
Attending from home is available if your situation calls for it. PHP is a step down from residential care and a step up from an intensive outpatient program.

Who a partial hospitalization program is for
PHP suits adults who need daily clinical structure but do not require 24-hour medical supervision. In practice, that usually means one of these situations:
- You are stepping down from residential treatment and are not ready to drop to a few sessions a week
- Outpatient therapy alone has not held, and the gaps between appointments are where things fall apart
- You are managing addiction alongside a mental health condition, and both need attention at the same time
- You have responsibilities at home that make residential treatment impractical, but you still need real structure
PHP is not the right level of care for everyone. If you are in immediate medical danger or need supervised detox, you need a higher level of care first. We will tell you that on the first call rather than admit you into the wrong program, and we will help you find the right place.
What treatment actually involves
Rather than a single approach applied to everyone, a PHP schedule combines several forms of treatment across the week. At Florida Addiction and Recovery Center that includes:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy, which focuses on the specific thought patterns that precede a relapse and gives you something concrete to do when you notice them
- EMDR and trauma therapy, for the underlying experiences that substance use is often managing
- Group sessions, where the work of hearing your own situation described by someone else happens
- Individual counseling with a member of the clinical team
- Medication-assisted treatment where it is clinically appropriate
- Family involvement, because the people you go home to are part of whether this holds

Most people in our PHP live in our on-site community housing, alongside other people in the program, rather than returning each evening to the environment where the addiction developed. It is the standard way we run PHP, not an optional add-on. Living from home during PHP is available for people whose situation requires it, and we will talk through whether that fits on the first call.
This matters more than it sounds. A large share of relapse happens in the hours outside of treatment, in familiar places and around familiar people. Community housing changes what those hours look like. It also means the person two doors down is three weeks further into the same process than you are, and can tell you what that felt like.
PHP for mental health and co-occurring conditions
Many people entering a partial hospitalization program are managing more than substance use. Anxiety, depression, and trauma frequently sit underneath addiction, and treating one while ignoring the other tends to produce a short recovery.
PHP mental health treatment works well here precisely because of the structure. Conditions that are difficult to stabilize in weekly therapy get daily attention, and the clinical team sees how you are actually doing rather than relying on a summary of the week you give them on a Tuesday afternoon.
Our co-occurring disorders approach addresses both in the same treatment plan, with the same clinical team, rather than sending you to two separate providers who never speak to each other.
PHP compared with intensive outpatient
The difference between the two levels is how much structure you get and how much of your week treatment occupies.
PHP is the more intensive of the two. It runs 9:00am to 2:30pm, Monday through Saturday, and is designed for people who need that structure to stay stable. An intensive outpatient program runs three hours a day, Monday through Saturday, with day and evening options, which leaves more of your week free. Like PHP, IOP is usually paired with our on-site community housing, though attending from home is available for people who need that flexibility. That suits people who are further along or who are holding down work or family commitments alongside treatment.
Many people move through both, starting in PHP and stepping down to IOP as things stabilize. You do not have to decide which one you need before you call. That is what the assessment is for.

Common questions
How is PHP different from residential treatment?
Residential treatment means 24-hour clinical and medical supervision on-site. PHP is a licensed outpatient level of care: you attend treatment during the day, and most of our PHP clients live in our on-site community housing for evenings and overnight rather than being supervised around the clock. That is an important distinction even though both involve living at our facility. PHP gives you clinical structure during the day while you practice managing evenings and weekends yourself, which is where the skills eventually have to work. Attending PHP from home instead of our community housing is available for people whose situation calls for it.
Can I keep working during PHP?
Usually not, at least not full time. PHP runs 9:00am to 2:30pm, Monday through Saturday. That is the point of it. People who need to keep working through treatment are often better suited to an intensive outpatient program, and we will tell you if that is the case.
How long does a partial hospitalization program last?
It depends on what you arrive with and how things progress. PHP is a level of care, not a fixed course, and most people step down to a less intensive program rather than finishing abruptly. Your treatment plan is reviewed as you go, and you will always know what the current plan is.
Do you treat people who have relapsed after previous treatment?
Yes, and it is common. A previous treatment episode that did not hold is information about what to do differently, not evidence that treatment does not work for you.
